İngilizce essay yazmak (makale) ortaokul, lise ve üniversitede yaygındır.

Hatta iş dünyasında essay yazmanız gerekebilir (ancak bu noktada genellikle rapor olarak adlandırılırlar).

Bir essay, yazarın görüşünün yanı sıra bilgileri de ifade eden kısa bir yazı parçası olarak tanımlanır.

İyi ve kolay bir essay yazmak için aşağıdaki tüyoları kullanabilirsiniz.

İngilizce essay yazma tüyoları

1. Essay tek bir fikre odaklanmalı.

Kompozisyonlar bir fikri anlatmak için yazılan bir 300 kelimelik 5 paragraflık kısa yazılardır.

Her paragraf 5-6 cümleden oluşabilir. Giriş gelişme ve sonuç bölümlerinden oluşuyor. Essayler ingilizce öğrenirken en çok duyduğumuz veya kullanacağımız yazma antremanlarıdır.

2. Taslak oluşturun.

Essay bir fikir anlatıyordu. Paragraflar bu fikri destekleyen alt fikirleri anlatıyor. Taslak oluştururken giriş; konuya nasıl gireceğinizi, sonuç nasıl bağlayacağınızı ve ara paragraflar konuyu nasıl destekleyeceğinizi anlatmalı.

3. Önce taslak yazın, sonra revize edin.

Bir çok usta yazarın yaptığı birşeydir. İlk yazarken çok fazla dikkat etmeden kendinizi kısıtlamadan yazın. Sonra kısa bir aradan sonra yazdıklarınızı revize edin.

4. Her paragraf bir fikir anlatmalı.

İnsanlar paragrafın ilk cümlesini o paragrafı özetleyen bir cümle olarak görme eğilimindeler.

İlk cümleyi okurlar ve paragrafın gerisini destekler şekilde yazıldığını varsayarlar. Okuyucu giriş ve sonucun yanında paragrafın ilk cümlelerini de okuyarak essayden birşey anlamalı.

5. Paragrafın ilk cümlesi paragrafı özetlemeli.

İnsan gözü makaleleri okurken ilk paragrafı okur ve genel bir bilgi alır. Ardından paragrafların ilk cümlelerini okuyarak aşağı doğru tarar. Bu taramada makalenin hangi paragrafını okuyacağına karar verir.

6. Cümleleri basit tutun.

Evet, ingilizce dili diğer diller gibi komplike cümleler kurmaya müsaade ediyor. Fakat karmaşık cümle kurmaya çalıştıkça hata oranı artabilir.

Özellikle ingilizce öğrenirken ilk başlarda karmaşık cümlelerden ziyade basit cümleler kurarak yazılarınızı hazırlayın.

7. Çok da basit cümleler kullanmayın.

İngilizce öğrenirken ilk başlarda kısa cümleler kurmak isteyebilirsiniz. Ardı ardına basit cümleler çocuk kitabı hissiyatı verir. Konunuz biraz ciddiyse basit cümlelerden ziyade biraz daha birleşik cümleler kullanmaya çalışın.

8. Edat ve bağlaçlar cümlenin görünmeyen detaylarıdır.

9. Noktalama işaretlerini iyice hazmedin.

İngilizce konuşurken tonlamayı sesimizle yapsak da yazılı metinlerde tonlamayı noktalama ile yapıyoruz. Yazı yazarken noktalama çok önemlidir.

10. Spelling yani harfleri doğru yazmamak acemi gösterir.

İngilizce öğrenmenin bir parçası da doğru yazmaktır. İngilizce kelimeler okunduğu gibi yazılmadığı için yazılışlarını tahmin edemeyebilirsiniz.

İngilizce kelimenin yazılışını ayrıca öğrenmeniz gerekiyor. Her kelimeye defalarca maruz kalmanız gerekiyor. Sürekli yazmanız kelime yazılışlarını öğrenmeniz için etkili bir yöntemdir.

11. Kelimeleri heceleyerek parçalara bölün.

Kelimeler ingilizcede yazıldığı gibi okunmadığı için yazılışlarını aklınızda tutamayabilirsiniz. Kendinize göre şifrelemeler yapabilirsiniz.

12. Emin değilseniz google’dan kontrol edin.

Aslında çok basit bir yöntem ama belki de birçok kişi kullanmıyor. Bir cümle kurmak istediniz ama bir bölümünden emin olamadınız. Hemen google’a cümleyi yazın, kesin daha önce yazılmış milyarlarca cümleden birine denk düşer, eğer denk düşmüyorsa google otomatik düzeltecektir.

Görseldeki örnekte Türkçeden yola çıkarak “onunla evlendim” ifadesini “I married with her” olarak yazarsanız otomatik tamamlama “I married to her” olarak öneriler gösteriyor. İngilizce öğrenirken google size bunun gibi birçok konuda yardımcı olacaktır.

13. Temel düzenli veya düzensiz yazım kurallarını öğrenin.

Türkçe’de olduğu gibi ingilizcede de harf yumuşaması, ulama, hece düşmesi gibi özel ses değişimleri var. Bu ses değişimlerini öğrendiğinizde hem okurken hem yazarken hata yapmamanızı sağlar. Bunların listesine şuralardan ulaşabilirsiniz.

14. Kısaltmalar (contractions) kullanmayın.

Her ne kadar konuşma dilinde kullanılıyor olsa da yazı diline kısaltmalar çok kullanılmıyor.

• isn’t -> is not

15. There is/There are kullanmayın.

Akademik yazımda pek kullanılması tavsiye edilmiyor. Daha açık olması adına there is/are kullanmayın.

Örneğin;

16. Kelimelere “Really”, “very”, “a lot”, “so” eklemek yerine özel kelimeler kullanın.

Bu her yerde söylenen, instagramda çok ilgili post paylaşılan vocabulary gerektiren, biraz ileri düzey bir teknik olsa da yazınızı güzelleştirecek önemli bir adımdır. Bir sıfatın anlamını güçlendirmek ve çoğaltmak için very kullanılır.

• very hard -> difficult
• A lot of students-> many students
• A lot of time is wasted -> Much time is wasted

17. Kelimelerin varsa fiil hallerini kullanın.

Kelimelerin daha güçlü olan fiil hallerini kullanın.

18. Yazınız bittiğinde sesli şekilde okuyarak kontrol edin.

Bu size yazarken farketmediğiniz akışta bir sorun varsa anlamanızı ve farketmenizi sağlar. Belki bazı uzun cümleler bölünmesi gerekiyordur. Belki anlatım bozukluğu veya fazlalık cümleler vardır. Anlatım bozukluğunu tespit edebiliyorsanız iyice ingilizce öğrenmişssinizdir diyebiliriz.

19. Bol bol okuma pratiği yapın.

İngilizce öğrenmenin en önemli adımlarından biri. Amacınız güzel ve anlaşılır cümleler kurarak yazı yazmak. Sizin nasıl güzel cümle kurulur bilgisine ve bol bol örneklere ihtiyacınız olacak. Sürekli okumak sizin cümle kurma örneklerinizi, noktalama işaretlerini, kelimeleri doğru yazma becerinizi geliştirecek.

20. Gramer kurallarına dikkat edin.

Yazınızda ilginç noktalara değinebilirsiniz, ancak zayıf dilbilgisi okuma deneyimini bozar ve ne pahasına olursa olsun bundan kaçınılmalıdır.

Great mains, pity about the chips

Came for lunch with my sister. We loved our Thai-style mains which were amazing with lots of flavour, very impressive for a vegetarian restaurant.

But the service was below average and the chips were too terrible to finish.

When we arrived at 1.40, we had to wait 20 minutes while they got our table ready. OK, so we didn’t have a reservation, but the restaurant was only half full. There was no reason to make us wait at all.

We ordered the chips as a side dish and they looked delicious. But, when we tasted them, they were overcooked and swimming in oil so we left most of them. We expected a lot more for $10!

When the waiter asked if everything was ok, we said we really didn’t like the chips and he said ‘That’s funny, I love them’ and that was it. He didn’t offer us anything else or take them off our bill. Also, when we didn’t leave a tip, he looked annoyed.

I was really excited about visiting Vega, and the mains were just fantastic, but the rest of the experience was really disappointing.

A summary of a line graph

The graph below shows how people buy music. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph illustrates trends in music buying habits between 2011 and 2018. It presents three different methods: streaming, downloading and buying CDs.

Overall, both downloads and physical sales of music have steadily declined. The latter has slumped since 2011, while the downturn for the former began in 2014. However, there has been a sharp rise in people streaming music since 2013.

In 2011, the majority of music sales were of CDs, at 55% of all sales. In contrast, streaming was not common at all at only 5%. Also, although people had started to download music, it only represented 35% of sales. As sales of CDs began to fall, downloads started to rise. They rose steadily and downloads overtook physical sales in mid-2013. During the same period, streaming doubled to 10% but then it started to grow more dramatically.

Downloads peaked in 2014 at about 43% of sales but fell to 30% by 2018. This was slightly higher than physical sales, which shrank to 25%. Streaming, on the other hand, overtook both of them and accounted for just over 40% of sales in 2018.

Comparing two charts

Overall, the two pie charts show that smartphones and tablets are used for the same purposes but to very different extents.

The first pie chart shows how people spend their time on smartphones while the second pie chart illustrates how time is spent on tablets. For both types of device, the top use is for games, but the figures differ greatly. 57% of the time spent on a tablet is given to playing games, while only 35% of the time spent on a smartphone is used for this. In contrast, smartphone users spend 29% of their time on their gadget accessing social networking sites compared with just 15% of tablet time spent on the same activity.

The third most popular use of the tablet is for consuming entertainment, with users spending 13% of their tablet time watching videos and listening to music. Smartphone users, however, dedicate only 8% of their smartphone time to such entertainment, preferring instead to spend 20% of their time on their phone accessing utilities. These can include maps, weather information and calculators.

There is a clear difference in the way people are using their smartphones and tablets. In general, while tablets are being used more for gaming and other forms of entertainment, smartphones seem to be the preferred option for tasks as well as communication with the world around us.
